Mini-hydroelectric power plants can be classified according to its head, namely;

1. Low head - 2 to 20 meters
2. Medium head - 20 to 150 meters
3. High head - 150 meters and above.

It can also be classified according from the point of view of power supply.

1. Stand-alone or isolated plants - supply an independent load center without being connected to other generating plants
2. Grid-connected plants - supply power to national, regional or island grids, which are operated by other power plants of bigger capacities.
