A Realistic Solution to Global Warming and Pollution

Date

Too much has been said about this issue of the looming Global Warming. However, aside from using this issue for political and popularity, and maybe, business gain, of some individuals and groups, very little is being done to solve this problem.

Because the actions of some groups are motivated by politics and popularity, their suggested solutions are mostly technically and financially impractical, in short, shallow. For example, some groups suggest a drastic shift to renewable energy like solar and wind in power generation; however, utilization of these energy resources is technically and financially impractical at this time because of its high investment cost and its intermittent nature. Al Gore suggested energy efficiency, however; this has a very little impact to emission reduction, moreover, it will not slow down the rate of increase of carbon emission. On the other hand Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) will not radically reduce the carbon emission since it only encourages energy generators to use a renewable resource or disperse the concentration of carbon emission.

I think, to solve this, we have to look at the basic law that governs our daily economic activity - The Law of supply and Demand. The analysis is very simple, if the demand for energy and power is low, the supply should also be low. If the consumption for electricity is low, the generation of electricity is low, thus carbon emission will also be low, and vice versa. More over, if the growth for demand of electricity is moving downward, the generation of electricity will also move downward, and its carbon emission as well, and vice versa.

The solution to this problem is not on the supply of power and energy (by shutting it down) but on the demand side. The supply is a function of the demand. Controlling the amount of demand will also control the amount of supply. Thus, we must concentrate on that side of the equation.

Therefore, the solution is very simple and practical;
1. Population Control (I suggest a two-child policy because it is less stringent than one-child policy of China)
2. Change of lifestyle, I mean consume only what you really need. Avoid luxurious living because there is lot of energy waisted on this kind of living.

I think I don’t have to explain this further.
