US Power Industry is in Need of Power (Electrical) Systems Engineers

Date

In the March/April 2007 issue of IEEE Power and Energy Magazine, one of the authors wrote an article citing a possible crisis in the US power industry, that is, a possible shortage of technical talents of Power Engineers. The author was referring to a report submitted by the Department of Energy to the US Congress with the following finding;

“Without strong support for strategic research in power systems engineering and without qualified replacements for retiring faculty, the strength of our Nation’s university-based power engineering programs will wane…”

The report also made recommendations, that is; to foster better math and science education for students to pursue engineering, and to build interest in energy related careers.

In respond to this, the IEEE Power Engineering Society (PES) is collaborating with universities and research institutions to address the potential crisis. They are also trying to increase the organizations membership, which soon be a vast a pool of professionals.

In short, international organization of Power systems Engineers already recognized a need for talent in the power industry, specifically in the United States. Professionals in the Philippines, or maybe, from the rest of the world, on the other hand, can take advantage of this situation and might consider practicing our profession in the land where the “grass is greener”. However, always remember that what they will need are technical talents and not a bunch of crap. So, from now on, Electrical Engineers might, as well, try to further nurture their technical expertise.
