If you are looking for a good research topic for your science or engineering research or thesis, I would suggest that you look into topic that proposes a solution to science and engineering problems using genetic algorithm.

The reason is that, the solution methodologies using genetic algorithm or evolutionary algorithm is a relatively new method such that some engineering problems hasn’t yet tried to solve using this technique. This is because the development and utilization of Genetic Algorithm was only triggered by the recent technological development of computers’ computing power and speed where it depends on. The application of genetic algorithm on science and engineering problems needs further and continuous research.

Genetic algorithm has recently found a good application in solving complex and practical science and engineering problems. In terms of quality of solution, it is far better than the traditional optimization methodologies. It is simple, easy to implement, and can solve a practical problem by minimizing simplifying assumptions.

Some of my colleagues in the University of the Philippines (UP) in Diliman has already successfully implemented genetic algorithm in solving engineering problems like optimal PCB routing, minimizing distribution losses by optimal feeding routing, optimal power flow, and distribution system planning. I also used this methodology in my undergraduate thesis about solving optimal capacitor allocation to minimize losses in the distribution system.

There are a lot more engineering problems that need to be solve and I know that genetic algorithm is a good choice.
