The disadvantage of using BPI-Petron Credit Card

Date

I made a call to BPI credit card representative to inquire why I am not anymore earning points by using my BPI credit card. After the conversation, I then, realized how clever the system is.

BPI-Petron Credit CardPetron - BPI credit card offers a 3% discount to all fuel purchases on selected Petron stations in the Philippines. This is equivalent to a discount of more than a peso at the current fuel prices and much higher during the time of soaring fuel prices in the first half of 2008.

Before, I used to wonder where BPI is getting the funds for the rebate. During the period of peak fuel prices in 2008, I used to save Php 120 (or roughly USD2.5) from my monthly fuel allowance.

On the other hand, other BPI credit cards offers a frequent user points - you earn points for every purchases using the card . Such accumulated points can later be used to purchase other products.

These credit card perks is really good, but you have to be wise in choosing which card product you will be using. BPI - Petron is appropriate for heavy fuel-consumers but this card product won’t accumulate you points for other purchases. Clever, huh. In that case, you might need to have a separate card for other purposes. Of course, a new card has a separate membership fee.
