Example of High Voltage Gas Insulated Switchgear/Substation (GIS)
This is an example of a high voltage (Single-bus) Gas Insulated Switchgear/Substation (GIS). Insulating the switchyard or substation using a gas with high dielectric breakdown, usually SF6, is used if the space available for the switchyard or substation is limited like in the urban areas. Since the dielectric breakdown of the insulating medium is high, clearances can be shorten, thus the substation is more compact and occupies lesser space. GIS is also used if the surrounding environment is very corrosive for the electrical equipments. Such corrosive environments are geothermal power plants and areas near shoreline.
This example is a single bus, 138 kV switchgear.
