A Right-Angle Drive Bulb Unit Kaplan Turbine

This is a 360 kW, right-angle drive bulb unit Kaplan Turbine that used to be installed in a low head mini-hydro project in Ramon, Isabela, Philippines. Kaplan Turbine is suitable for a low head but high water flow application. For this turbine, its rated net head is only 3.5 meters while its rated flow rate is 13.8 cubic meter per second. Low head turbines are usually huge in size because of its function to allow a high flow of water. This particular turbine has a weight of 14.7 tons.

This is one of the “never-been-used” mini hydro turbines of NEA that remained stagnant for years due to project cancellation. The said project was Magat C that should have been operational since 1986. Four (4) turbines and three (3) generators have already been delivered at site and are just left to rot along the roadside of its proposed location. Magat C used to harness power from high water flow in the main irrigation river of NIA in Isabela Area. Magat A and B are already operational.
