Typical Substation Surge Arrester

This one is installed in a 230 kV substation. Surge arresters protect vital equipments in the power systems, like step-up transformer, against abnormally very high voltage in the transmission line caused by surge impulses, specifically switching surge and lightning surge. In this picture, when a lightning strikes a power transmission line, the induced high voltage travels aong the line towards both ends; this arrester will bypass this high voltage to the ground so that the nearby transformer will not be damaged. Arresters like this usually have a counter to count the number of impulse voltages that it has “arrested”.
