Power Transformer Core-Coil Assembly
Wondering what’s inside a power transformer?
Well, below is a photo of a de-tanked 100 MVA, 13.8kV – 230kV power transformer. As what you see, everything inside a power transformer of this capacity is totally massive. There is the huge three-phase primary windings, and the laminated core. The weight of the core and coil winding alone of this transformer is a whooping 75 tons.

The support structure of the core-coil assembly is mostly steel and a special kind of wood. Wood is used to further reduce the eddy current losses and also to act as an insulator. Winding insulation, on the other hand, is a special type of paper – craft paper.
