The Obsoleteness of Dmoz.org

Dmoz.org, which is also known as Open Directory Project (ODP) is a very large directory of millions of websites in the internet, maintained and categorized by selected editors worldwide. It is free to distribute and re-publish. Google for example is using the ODP in their directory.

Before, having a website listed in the ODP is a very precious privilege, though it takes a long time of waiting before being listed, because it influence and boost the website’ s ranking in the search engines. Today, due to the continuous development of search engine algorithm, website listing in the ODP does not anymore, at least for Google, give a significant impact in the search results position. In fact, many websites today that are not listed in the ODP, can easily outrank websites listed in the directory, using the same keyword.

Even the objective of DMOZ, to list as many websites, in the directory is not anymore applicable due to the fast increasing number of websites that are created everyday. Also, due to the development of the quality of search results, directory listings is not anymore necessary, unlike before.

ODP became an institution in organizing websites in the internet to make it more accessible and usable for the internet users, just like Google and other search engines today. But today, being listed in the ODP is not anymore a frustration because any website can rank high in the search engines without having listed, just use the appropriate search engine optimization techniques.
