The website subjected to Google bombing doesnt have to contain the targeted keywords, provided that, the keywords appear in the anchor text. Google bombing is known to be a common practice by some organizations to degrade or popularize some known people or entity. One of the popular Google Bombing victim is Pres. George Bush. That is, if you search for the word “failure” or “miserable failure”, you will find the biography of Pres. George Bush as the number one in the search results.Actually, it is not only Google whose search results respond positively on Google Bombing. MSN and Yahoo will also have a similar result.Spam or Not
Spam is a blatant manipulation of Search Engine results using unnatural way of increasing pagerank. Google penalizes websites that practices web spams. Google bombing, on the other hand, cannot be, outrightly, qualified as a deliberate manipulation of search results or spam simply because the linking seems to be natural and the cause is subjective in nature.
Gaming Google
During these times when publishing websites is not hard to do, because of the availability of free and easy to set-up web blogs, Google Bombing became a game of giving descriptions to other people using search keywords.
How to Stop or Disrupt Google Bombing
Ideally, Google have nothing to do with this, since search results are “fairly” processed using the pagerank algorithm, which is automated and does not influenced by human intervention. Thus, the only way to disrupt or stop Google bombing, in putting a particular website, using a targeted keywords, on the top of the search results, is to counter act the effect of the anchor text on the page ranking. This can be done by pointing that anchor text to other website. It is a wrong way to have another set of anchor text that will point to the subjected website because both anchor text will have a separate effect on the ranking, thereby, not eliminating the original effect.
For example, on Pres. Bush’s “miserable failure”. Some people thought that producing websites that link to Bush website using the anchor text, “success” will remove the website of bush on top position if “miserable failure” was searched. The effect of this will be, displaying the same website for both sets of keywords. The right thing to do is to produce websites that point to other website, not bush’s, using the anchor text, “miserable failure”, thus the two website will compete on the top position using these keywords.
In Google side, the effect of Google bombing can be eliminated by imposing weight for off-topic and on-topic anchor text. A lesser weight in pageranking must be imposed if the anchor text is not related with the content of the website. It is not reasonable to impose a penalty to those websites who links on the targeted website using the targeted anchor text.
