Transformer Cooling Classes

Voltage and current transformation in a power transformer involves a significant quantity of electrical energy losses. Such losses are the losses in the core and copper winding which are dissipated into heat. To maintain the operation of a power transformer within the thermal limit, proper cooling system should be used and employed in its design. It also increases the capacity of the transformer.

Transformers usually have an oil cooling medium and a radiator to dispense the heat that is generated inside the transformer. Transformer cooling system can be classified into the following classes;

1.Liquid-Immersed Air-cooled
1.Class OA : liquid-immersed, self-cooled
2.Class OA/FA : liquid-immersed, self-cooled/forced-air-cooled
3.Class OA/FA/FA : liquid-immersed, self-cooled/forced-air-cooled/ forced-air-cooled

A fan is used to force the air flow in the radiator.

2.Liquid-Immersed Air-cooled /Forced-Liquid Cooled
1.Class OA/FA/FOA : liquid-immersed, self-cooled/forced-air-cooled/forced-liquid-cooled
2.Class OA/FOA/FOA : liquid-immersed, self-cooled/forced-air-forced-liquid-cooled/forced-air-forced-liquid-cooled

An oil pump is used to force the circulation of oil inside.

3.Liquid Immersed Water-Cooled
1.Class OW : liquid-immersed, water-cooled
2.Class OW/A : liquid immersed, water-cooled/self-cooled
